Push notifications look different for users with various devices and installed browsers. To use web push appearance correctly for each platform we should find out allowed text character limits, image sizes, etc. Otherwise, there is a risk to send cropped messages.

What are push notifications?

For example, if browser supports push notifications with title of 40 characters, your header with 60 characters will not be readable.

We’ll review allowed web push character limits for different operating systems and browsers.

What is The Number of Characters That I Can Put in Mobile Push Notification?

On mobile devices, push notifications pop up at the top of the screen. To see a notification a user have to unlock their device.

Gravitec.net platform provides clients with opportunity to check a web push preview for each available browser and OS. Thus, while creating a notification you can see exactly the same message your recipients get. Therefore, we can check the character limit for any platform in real time.

Let’s get to it.

A basic notification includes a title, a message text, an icon and a link.

A title contains up to 65 characters, a description is generally limited by 240 characters. However, some parts of this texts can be lost accordingly to browsers features.

Android devices can receive notifications via four browsers: Chrome, Opera, Firefox and Yandex. Besides, Android supports rich web push with big images and extra buttons.

We’ve created the random text in Gravitec account to check the number of characters available for Android.

That’s a preview example for Chrome browser on Android device.

The visible text limitation is 30 characters for a title and 65 characters for a message body. The same characters number is available for Yandex browser.

Chrome, Opera and Firefox allows expanded web push appearance with unlimited body length. A user needs to swipe down a pop-up to read more info from a message, if it contains extra characters.

Moreover, rich push notifications are available for Chrome, Opera and Yandex browser on Android devices.

Chrome and Yandex has the same character limits as in the basic web push form. In Opera, the message body length is shorter comparing to the standard notification type.

Title character limits (basic web push):

  • Chrome – 30;
  • Opera – 50;
  • Firefox – 30;
  • Yandex – 35.
Please note that depending on OS and browser versions minor differences in character limits are allowed.

Currently, iOS doesn’t support web push notifications. However, app push notifications are available for iOS devices. It means that apps can reach iPhone users with push notification, unlike websites. In that case, app push notification limits are 4 lines or 178 characters.

What’s the difference between app and browser push notifications?
